White Blood count movement
Like amoebae, WBC’s are motile cells, moving via pseudopodia following chemotaxtic chemical trails to their prey. The WBC’s commonly seen in oral biofilms are typically immobile, but occasionally can be seen moving through oral biofilms as in this video. The reason more WBC’s aren’t seen actively pursuing bacteria in pathogenic biofilms is because the pathogens are able to up and down-regulate over 100 genes in WBC’s responsible for locating and phagocytosing pathogenic species.
